Schools And Mental Health: When The Parent Has To Take Charge

This is an article from NPR’s Ed series on mental health in schools.

This article follows only one family as it struggles with raising two girls with mental health disorders.  In the article, their mother is very involved with their school life and worked very closely with the teachers to get her daughters the help they needed.

For the oldest one, that worked.  For the younger one it did not.  Their mother found that schools are not prepared to deal with these issues without a lot of pushing from parents.  She had to do her own research and reach out to online support groups to finally get some type of help.

Please read this article and see if you agree with their mother about public school’s ability to integrate mentally ill children into the main population.
